Golden Ratio Frequencies is proud to announce our latest physical release, Chalybeate Spring, a collaborative album from Kit Monteith & Jérémy Moors.
Kit Monteith is a visual artist and multi-instrumentalist based in between Oxford and London. He performs as the live percussionist with the award-winning and critically acclaimed dance-rock band FOALS, as well as creating video works for the likes of Mykki Blanco, Yann Tiersen, and Mogwai. Jérémy Moors is an Oxford-based electronic musician, and part of Techno collective IOEAIE and DDC collective, carving sounds from an array of synthesis and hardware.
A few minutes’ walk from Monteith’s home, there is a chalybeate spring, which is a naturally occurring mineral water spring containing salts of iron. Early in the 17th century, these spring waters were thought to have miraculous healing properties, including the ability to cure ‘lowness of spirit’, amongst many other ailments. Monteith visited the spring almost daily to drink from it before returning home, inspired to work on music during a particularly fertile period of creativity throughout 2020 and 2021. Like the pure, flowing waters of the spring, the eponymous album Chalybeate Spring is a culmination of some of his most serene and meditative work to date.
After outlining the basic forms of most tracks Monteith invited his long-term friend and collaborator, Jérémy Moors, to bring his skills in modular synthesis to the project. Together they finalised the compositions, remaining always conscious of the underlying theme of flowing water. Chalybeate Spring is a quiet celebration of the experience in finding contemplative calm through creativity and of the bond that collaborative creation can forge between old friends.
Through 9 pieces of sonic sublimity, tones and textures flow, fluidly weaving around a fundamental core, rooted in heart and steeped in spirit, that evoke swells of emotion to spring forth, tantalising the ear and soothing the soul. Opening track “Elements” sets the mood with watery surges of sound gently bubbling into ecstatic flux; those themes following into “Isolation”, featuring liquescent patterns of repeating sequences pulsing with movement. Elsewhere, tracks like “One Micron” drip with melancholy, and the emotive “Rain Waves” wash over the listener with pads, swirls, and gentle percussive bass, absolving us from the weight of the worldly concerns and ushering in a state of tranquillity.
The album is augmented by a range of guests and talent, with bass guitar duties handled by Everything Everything’s Jeremy Pritchard, mastering by Polypore’s James Buckley and a collaborative audio visual series accompaniment from visual artist Sam Wiehl of Fuzz Club, Bonnacons of Doom and Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia.
Physical editions will be manifested as a special limited-edition box set, containing the cassette album duplicated on pro-dubbed C45 “spring water clear” transparent cassette with on-body print, double-sided 4-panel inlay, screen printed Golden Ratio Spiral acetate, and accompanied by a small vial of spring water collected from the chalybeate spring near Monteith’s home.
**PLEASE NOTE: Due to shipping restrictions, international shipments will contain only the empty vials for listeners to collect their own spring water.**
